So my girl friend works at a salon, and she recently got a new salon manager. The new manager, from what Ive heard does some pretty abusive and shady things. She knows that my girl friend is supposed to be off at a particular time but does not show up to relieve her of her duties. The manager will be scheduled at a particular time and will not show up several hours later, while saying she had to stop quickly at the post office (which does not result in a 4 hour detour). She also will talk down to my girl friend and curse when talking to her, my girl friends finds this un-welcomed and unproffessional. The manager does not show up on time consistently almost every day and complains to my girl friend how she can not bare to watch the registers for a few hours at a time. She does many other unproffessional things and talks to and treats my girlfriend(20 years old) like a child. This manager is supposedly paid salary and she does not work the full hours she is scheduled, I am a manager at a different establishment, and i believe that to be stealing if someone is paid for 80 hours and does not work those hours. My girl friend has also tried talking with this boss to see if they can come to some kind of middle-ground on how she is treated. She has tried to resolve the issue many times with this boss but nothing has worked. My girl friend has even spoke with her managers boss and also the Human Resources dept of this company. Nothing has been done. This has all resulted in a very large amount of stress and tear shed that. It is also hard to explain what else this girl does but most of the things she does are extremely unproffessional and un welcomed and the fact that the HUMAN RESOURCES dept. has done nothing astonishes me. Why do they even have such a dept. Is this a legitimate case?

Sounds like your gf's Boss is a piece of work. My questions are: 1) is your gf salaried or hourly? If she is hourly then she should be paid for the time she's simmering around waiting for the boss to show up to relieve her/ in overtime rate, of course. If she decline to pay her then, you/she can report this to Dept of Labor/Wage and Hour Division. 2) what is your girlfriend's race(Asian,Hispanic,African American,etc.) 3) Is she only doing this abuse to her or there are others?
You need to give us more info. HR's are paid by the Company and you will be lucky if you will find one that will be honest enough like our very own OnYourSide in this forum to help your GF. They are usually per management, sad to say. Tell your gf to document everything. Unfortunately there are no laws against a mean and abusive Boss YET. But they WILL make mistakes somehow and do illegal things that will get them trapped so its impt. to write every details of the abuse. tell your GF to hang in there.Posted 3 weeks ago # -

msliberated's questions are all good.Can I ask what was the REACTION of this manager's boss and the HR person when your girlfriend spoke to them about her concerns?
How long has your girlfriend been at this salon?
I'm really interested in whether your girlfriend is paid hourly or on a salaried basis. If she's paid on an hourly basis, she BETTER be getting paid for every extra MINUTE she sits around waiting for her irresponsible manager to wander in to relieve her. I realize that's probably the least of her concerns, but it's about the only LEGAL issue she'll be able to hang her hat on. Everything else is purely rudeness and poor management.
