i work the closing shift at the local hospital dietary department. my boss seems like a nice lady, but i have only been there a couple of months. the problem is that another cook who has been there longer seems tp think that she is the boss and treats every one like she is their superior....inluding the boss, i'll call het matty. since i started working at the hospital, the boss's pet....i'll call her tori, has been accusing me of things that simply are not true. for instance, tori will tell matty that i did not lock up the kitchen doors, the refrigerators, or the office when i know that i did and i have my co-worker as a witness. but because matty and tori are best friends, matty automatically believes anything tori says and everybody else is lieing. also, matty has said that she found the doors unlocked and things a mess when she opens. at first, i thought that she was just looking out for tori so she wouldn't look like a liar. tonight, however, i found out some things by talking to the night time housekeepers who clean the dining room at about 10:30pm every night. they told me that they see tori come in at night while they are cleaning the dining room & go into the kitchen. not surprising, since she opens up most of the time and has the keys to get into everything, as does the head night nurse in case a patient needs something to eat that isn't provided in the nourishment room. but the housekeepers will not say anything about tori going into the kitchen after hours because they fear losing their jobs because tori carries so much favour with the boss and there are no cameras in the basement where the kitchen is located. also, my co-worker and i caught tori spying on us through the windows in the door of the kitchen at around 5:45pm... more than 4 hours after her shift ended and an hour and a half before mine ended today. i don't know what to do! if i say anything to matty, i'm the one who has to endure a 20 minute lecture about "getting along", and if i go to the hr supervisor, i have to worry about matty and tori ganging up on me even more.

Hi, tinalynn80 -
Welcome to the Forum. I definitely wouldn't go to HR with this complaint - there's nothing they can or will do about it except refer it back to your supervisor to handle within the department. And you know what the result of that will be.I'd say you have two options at this point:
1) Make nicey-nice with Tori - compliment her on her hair, her clothing, her perfume. Don't go all overboard on it and compliment her on anything and everything or it will seem false to her - like you're trying to get on her good side - which you are. Compliment maybe ONE thing a day. Phrase the compliment like "Those are the cutest shoes, Tori - where'd you get them?" instead of "I love those shoes, Tori - where'd you get them?" When you keep the "I" out of it, so the focus is totally on Tori, it seems more sincere. Ask her opinion or advice on a few things - "Hey Tori, how do you think I should do xxxxx" (work-related). Slowly, she may come around to see you as a friend rather than a competitor - because clearly she sees you as a competitor.
2) The other thing you could do would be a short-term solution that would let Tori know you're onto her little game at night and foil her at the same time. But like I said - it'll short-term and will certainly only escalate the situation. Come in to work super-early and check the locks on everything to make sure all is still locked. If everything is still locked - fine. If anything is unlocked, come in around 11 pm a few nights and check - then lock it all up again. Tori would definitely get the message that you're onto her game - but it will also put you squarely in her crosshairs.
Let's see if anyone else on the Forum has any ideas.

Why are people such people !@@#$%. Honestly, there is something wrong in the head with some of these people. Maybe the lethal "Swine" flue is called the swine flu for a reason. Would be great if there was something oging around that would get rid of all the people who acted like this. The world would be a better place. Sorry, but it is true and it wouldn't shed a tear.

tinalynn80, Welcome!
OnYourSide pretty much covered it! This is just how "a new kid in town" treatment and really to me should only happen in high school locker rooms!!!!! Petty
I would cover my ass at all times if I were you. The boss didn't write you up nor give you a strong warning right?!?! So......if she/he is the boss there she is well aware of what these two are doing(Laverne & Shirley). Keep doing your job and do it well......take these things as a challenge. Just watch your back and follow OYSsuggestions....check and re-check every possibility.
Be patient for now until you pass you 90-days..... you're still in your 2nd month do not do anything that will give boss a reason to let you go.(easier b-4 the 90 days)Posted 3 weeks ago # -
Let me join the other members in welcoming you to the forum, Tinalynn80.
Document everything this woman is doing to you as well as what co-workers are telling you. Theres not much you can do at this time, but it things escalate, you are going to NEED everything she has done to you. She sounds like the kind of person that is either just an overbearing control freak or she could keep doing mean things to you that could lead to illegal activities against you..........Just remember that you are NOT alone........

it's happened again, only this time i was threatened with a write-up. tori went and tolt matty that i "cussed her out" in friday, which was matty's day off. when i told matty that i didn't do that, she replied"yes you did and you're lucky i don't write you up for it!" then she said that the doors were unlocked agagin and when i told her what the housekeepers see, she said that that just isn't true. so i asked matty if she thought everyone else was lieieng, or just tori. then she started chastising me agagin because how dare i say that tori is dishonest. i think maybe i should just accept a lower paying job to get away from the headaches and sleepless nights it's causing me. i'm always so worried about my job and i'm not even doing anything wrong. guess i'll go eat worms....

oh yes, btw, i don't know if i mentioned this, but i am the only woman in the kitchen under 40....could this maybe be a cause for discrimination do you think?

I laid out a couple of options for you, tinalynn80. Try one of those before you just quit. And no, "Under 40s" are not protected - it's only "Over 40s".

If you want to catch her unlocking the doors, set up a hidden camera and document it. You could then go to a higher boss with the footage. Do it over the course of a few days or even weeks.
Also write down all of the housekeepers names and contact information who backed you up - but don't tell them they might have to be a witness - that tends to spook people. Do it subtlety. Maybe get their addresses for your Christmas card list or something.
If you are not in a protected class then they could probably just get rid of you, but I think if they try to set you up and fire you for misconduct then you might have a wrongful termination case - not sure.
You really are probably better off shopping for another job. It sucks to be where you aren't wanted. Try to hang onto the job though while you are looking. Seerms e4asier to get a job when you are already employed for some reason.

I like the idea of the hidden camera. I've heard of "nanny cams" that parents buy to keep an eye on their babysitters when they're away from home. Don't know how expensive it would be, but it would sure be interesting to see THAT footage!

I really liked the hidden camera idea, too. Catch her in the act and get management off your butt.......And I *believe* they can be purchased pretty reasonably on Ebay.
